“We are stronger together”
Everything we do is driven by a simple goal to see healthy koalas living in healthy environments, protected by stronger safeguards that give them the best possible chance of survival into the future. The koala is an Australian icon, and maybe the number one Ambassador species on the global stage. Yet decades of neglect are driving it to extinction.
As with people and communities, we have a duty to provide Australia’s animals, and the ecosystems needed for both their and our survival, a safe and secure future. Yet, in 2025 the federal government approved the destruction of more than 57,000 hectares of habitat for threatened species, the worst 12-month period in 15 years, according to the Australian Conservation Foundation. Add to this the increased frequency, scale and extremes of climate emergencies and already degraded and fragmented habitats and it is clear that action is needed now

Koalas, like many other species, have been left in an untenable situation for any wildlife population dependent on a forest habitat, where their historic range is now denuded of trees.
A 2020 Swiss Re survey, index and report stated, of the G20 countries, Australia is ranked in second (worst) place, after South Africa, for failing or fragile ecosystems.
The reality is that, for wildlife, we have no useful response to either:
- Predictable Emergencies (overpopulation, trapped populations, land clearing, development, mining), or,
- Unpredictable Emergencies (fires, floods, storms, heatwaves, disease outbreaks).
Successive state and federal governments have shown zero interest in dealing with this issue, including for iconic and threatened species.
The Koala Alliance recognises the need to educate our politicians, at all levels of government and from all parties, of the risks facing koalas and the solutions available to ensure their survival in the wild. We advocate for koalas through a diverse range of strategic approaches.
Central to our approach is a commitment to truth, grounded in evidence and rigorous inquiry.
A core focus of the Koala Alliance is addressing the many inaccuracies and misconceptions surrounding koala health and population numbers in Victoria, and throughout the koala’s historic range. There has been limited transparency about how koalas are managed in the state, and many of the organisations and institutions that could raise concerns have remained largely silent.
We are committed to researching, questioning and challenging the narratives that shape public understanding and policy decisions about koalas. As Australians we deserve to the facts about koalas and all our native species. This work is not easy.
Just the Facts: Koala Alliance is delighted that in a short time since the launch of the organisation we have become a trusted source for the media, both nationally and internationally.
As a 100% volunteer run organisation we welcome donations to support our projects, investigations, campaigns, rallies and reports. We would love you to join us and we know we are stronger together!
